A massive emergency response exercise is scheduled exercise is scheduled for the Chicago area beginning Sunday.

The practice events spread over five days will include a simulated commercial airplane crash, a simulated rail-car evacuation and a simulated terrorist attack.

Road closures and detours are possible in the Chicago area.

"It is a full-scale exercise, so residents can expect to see emergency responders looking and acting as if this was a real homeland security/domestic response mission," the Illinois Army and Air National Guard said in a press release.

The exercise will begin Sunday with a simulated jetliner crash in southwest suburban Oak Lawn, "with debris and mass casualties scattered throughout the area," said Maj. Gen. William Enyart of the Illinois National Guard.

Toyota Park in Bridgeview will be the staging area for the Guard starting Monday. Also, Chicago's Office of Emergency Management will practice setting up a remote command center at Soldier Field to handle a large-scale disaster.

On Tuesday, a simulated meth lab will be raided on Green and York Streets in Bensenville.

On Wednesday, Bensenville area also will be the site of numerous simulated terrorist attacks "including takedowns of suspected terrorists," simulated building collapses with trapped victims and mass decontamination and medical care by the National Guard.

At the same time, Rush University Medical Center in Chicago will receive "suspected biological agent patients to decontaminate and medically evaluate."

On Wednesday evening, the CTA will stage a rail-car evacuation SWAT incident at 15th and Clark streets. Chicago police K-9 units will detect "simulated explosives manufactured by a terrorist group on a CTA train." A simulated explosion will occur from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 4 a.m. Thursday. There will be road closings in the area.

On Thursday there will be another takedown situation in the Bensenville area and a simulated chemical explosion at the Nalco Co. plant at 6233 W. 66th St. in Chicago.

The Illinois National Guard says more than 50 local, state, federal and private agencies will participate in the drill to learn how to respond to disasters. The five-day training exercise will
run from Sunday through Thursday, June 17.

*This is a week old but well worth listening to. The problem is the people who are in the 'grey' area slip through the cracks. The wording twists and turns the actual meaning of the law that Obama wants to pass regarding health care reform. What exists now is a prime example of how poorly the 'process' is. The people who are behind those desks rarely know the assistance program that exist now, so how are they going to benefit the people who aren't "seniors", who need help and can't get it due to the ignorance of the government employees? They make people crawl over and over again to get the benefits they worked for.. ah but the illegals and immigrants sit with attorneys and get handed the benefits that Americans can't get. Pathetic. That's what is seen. Tell me a good story about someone who isn't illegal, an immigrant, a pregnant gal or people (immigrants - legal or not) who come here for medical help... It's not easy to find a story is there?

If you're wondering who Vera Baker Vera Baker -- the woman rumored to have been involved with Barack Obama during his Senate race -- is, then you must not have been paying attention to the Republicans during the 2008 presidential campaign.

John McCain's camp made a big fuss over the former political fund-raiser's relationship with Obama during his 2004 Senate race.

Implications were that they were more than co-workers. But even back then, no one took these allegations seriously.

Which may have been because the Republican party was throwing anything they could at Obama -- that he wasn't a natural U.S. citizen, that he was a card-carrying Muslim, that he was a terrorist supporter, etc, etc.

According to Wikipedia, here's Baker's impressive background: She was born in 1974 in San Francisco, where she grew up. She graduated from Mills College in Oakland, Calif., and in 2000 founded Baker, Wambu & Associates, a political consulting firm that soon became a top fund-raiser for the Congressional Black Caucus.

She was the finance director for Obama's campaign for the U.S. Senate in Illinois in 2004. She also was the deputy political director at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

After she left politics, Baker worked at a municipal bond brokerage and later launched Cape Caribbean, LLC, a strategic marketing firm.

She reportedly now lives in the Caribbean.

Chicago - One of Todd Stroger’s top-ranking Cook County employees received a county contract for her private business just days after being hired, a FOX Chicago News investigation has found.

In February, Stroger appointed Carla Oglesby to be his deputy chief of staff. Ten days later, Oglesby’s company CGC Communications, received a check from the county for $24,975. The contract was just $25 under the mandatory reporting requirement to the County Board.

"I think at this point we're having a going out of business sale and everything must go and we're pulling in all of Todd's friends and family and giving them jobs and contracts," said Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider.

"Anything over $25,000 would have to endure the scrutiny of the board," Schneider said. "We've seen too many times that these contracts fly right under the radar of the $25,000 threshhold and this is happening time and time again."

"My services for the evening were done - and there was no indication she was going to leave the hotel that night."

A top DC source told The ENQUIRER exclusively that the driver's account had been independently corroborated by investigators who believe the couple spent the night together at the hotel.

The ENQUIRER has also learned that on-site hotel surveillance video camera footage could provide indisputable evidence.

"Investigators are attempting to obtain a tape from the hotel (that) shows Vera and Barack together," the DC insider confided.

US: al-Qaida exemplifies new-age nuclear threat

WASHINGTON – The White House on Friday warned that al-Qaida is quietly hunting for an atomic bomb, adding urgency to a historic summit next week where President Barack Obama will try to persuade world leaders to step up efforts to keep nuclear weapons out of terrorist hands.

Expectations for decisive action by the 47 countries are low, because existing controls haven't worked as well as hoped and some nations worry tighter regulation will only slow civilian nuclear power projects.

But the White House has high hopes for the two-day summit, where the U.S. and Russia are to sign a long-delayed agreement to dispose of tons of weapons-grade plutonium from Cold War-era nuclear weapons. That is the kind of preventive action the summit is meant to inspire.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the gathering will be the largest assembly of world leaders hosted by an American president since the 1945 San Francisco conference that founded the United Nations.

Clinton said some attendees are "helping us keep a very close watch on anyone we think could be part of a network that could lead to the sale of or transfer of nuclear material to al-Qaida or other terrorist organizations."

Obama will try to set the tone Sunday by meeting the leaders of India and Pakistan — two nuclear armed foes who have managed to avoid atomic war — as well as South Africa and Kazakhstan, two countries that voluntarily gave up nuclear weapons programs.

The conference itself will open Monday with a working dinner hosted by Obama, who also plans to meet individually that day with the leaders of Jordan, Malaysia, Armenia and China. It will close Tuesday with a joint statement on the threat of the illicit transfer of nuclear materials and technology and a plan for keeping them locked up.

Three countries at the heart of the international debate over nuclear dangers — Iran, North Korea and Syria — were not invited to the summit, and Israel, whose undeclared nuclear arsenal is a core grievance among Muslim nations, scrapped plans for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to attend.

An Israeli official said Netanyahu canceled after getting word that other participants would use the summit to criticize Israel's nuclear program. Israel is believed to have dozens, perhaps hundreds, of nuclear weapons. In Netanyahu's absence, Israel will be represented by Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor.

Clinton welcomed Israel's participation.

"Israel shares with us a deep concern about Iran's nuclear ambitions and also about the threat of nuclear terrorism," she said.

Iran and other Muslim countries accuse the United States of hypocrisy for ignoring Israel's nuclear arsenal while demanding that others forego such weapons.

In the U.S. view, a nuclear-armed Iran would threaten Israel and the West, while North Korea, which has tested a nuclear device, is a continuing threat to sell its nuclear know-how to other hostile nations.

The U.S. believes Syria also has nuclear ambitions; an Israeli airstrike in 2007 destroyed what the U.S. asserts was a nearly completed nuclear reactor designed to make plutonium.

But the nuclear security summit is less concerned with countries that acquire nuclear weapons than with the terrorists and criminals believed to be seeking them.

Obama has set a goal of securing all of the world's nuclear materials from theft or diversion within four years, and he hopes next week's summit will endorse that objective.

Gary Samore, Obama's chief adviser on limiting the spread of nuclear weapons, said a number of countries are expected to announce Monday that they are taking unilateral actions.

That may include plans to retrofit nuclear reactors to use a form of uranium fuel less easily converted to use in weapons. Some countries are expected to announce their intent to sign international conventions on nuclear security.

The 1980 Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, for example, was amended in 2005 to require states to protect such materials even when not in transit. The convention also expands measures to prevent nuclear smuggling.

But not enough countries have approved the 2005 amendment to put it into force, and the White House hopes to persuade countries attending the summit to accept it.

Sharon Squassoni, a nuclear expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, estimates there are 500 tons of weapons-usable materials in civilian and military reactors that could be targets for sabotage or diversion.

The summit's main focus, Samore said, will be on keeping two key ingredients for a nuclear bomb — plutonium and highly enriched uranium — from traffickers and terrorists.

Thomas Cochran, senior staff scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said Friday that the top security priority should be highly enriched uranium, which is easier than plutonium to engineer into a weapon.

"A crude but potentially devastating nuclear device can be made with as much of this material as would fit in a six-pack of soda cans," Cochran said.

Fear of nuclear terror crystallized after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington. Obama last week declared that it poses a graver danger than the risk of war between nuclear nations.

Not all countries share the Obama administration's view of the threat; some worry more about countries like Iran, North Korea and Syria illicitly developing a nuclear arsenal.

Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser, said Friday that the threat of nuclear-armed terrorists is urgent.

"We know that terrorist groups, including al-Qaida, are pursuing the materials to build a nuclear weapon and we know that they have the intent to use one," Rhodes said.

Clinton described the threat in stark terms Friday in a speech in Louisville, Ky.

"A 10-kiloton nuclear bomb detonated in Times Square in New York City would kill a million people," Clinton said, referring to a weapon with explosive power about half that of the U.S. bomb dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki in August 1945, killing an estimated 80,000.

"Many more would suffer from the hemorrhaging and weakness that comes from radiation sickness," she added. "Beyond the human cost a nuclear terrorist attack would also touch off a tsunami of social and economic consequences across our country."

Although Iran will not attend the summit, its nuclear program is likely to come up there. Obama is pushing for a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for additional sanctions against Iran.

President Obama questions Sarah Palin's nuclear acumen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Thursday made clear he was not going to take advice from Republican Sarah Palin when it comes to decisions about the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

Palin, the former vice presidential candidate, has not been shy about criticizing Obama's policies and this week weighed in on his revamped nuclear strategy, saying it was like a child in a playground who says 'punch me in the face, I'm not going to retaliate.'

"I really have no response to that. The last I checked, Sarah Palin is not much of an expert on nuclear issues," Obama said in an interview with ABC News.

Pressed further on Republican criticism that his strategy restricts the use of nuclear weapons too much, Obama added:

"What I would say to them is, is that if the secretary of defense and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff are comfortable with it, I'm probably going to take my advice from them and not from Sarah Palin."

Obama unveiled a new policy earlier this week that restricts U.S. use of nuclear weapons and renounces development of new atomic weapons.

Gingrich reminded conservative activists why he was one of the nation's most polarizing leaders in the 1990s, opening the Southern Republican Leadership Conference with a biting assessment of Obama's policies.

"The most radical president in American history has now thrown down the gauntlet to the American people: 'I run a machine. I own Washington and there's nothing you can do about it,'" Gingrich said. He urged his fellow Republicans to stop what he called Obama's "secular, socialist machine."

Highly charged words, for sure. But that's standard fare at the three-day GOP gathering that is drawing several presidential hopefuls. Friday's headliner is former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

Gingrich has not declared his intentions for 2012, but his appearances in New Orleans had all the trappings of a fledging presidential campaign, from an intimate meeting with tea party activists — his staff photographer took grip-and-grin pictures of Gingrich posing with every activist — to his wade-through-the-crowd entrance at the GOP conference, with the thumping beat of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" drawing the crowd to its feet.

He said Obama's policies — particularly health care and economic stimulus legislation — have put the United States on the road to socialism. The former speaker did not specifically explain why he thought Obama is a secularist, though he did say the GOP wasn't afraid of recognizing faith's role in American society.

Gingrich offered Republicans an antidote to Democratic accusations that GOP leaders do little more than oppose policies — the so-called party of no. He said Republicans should underscore the policies they favor — yes on tax cuts, a lower deficit, fewer regulations and a sensible energy plan.

"The point is there are many things we can say yes to," Gingrich said.

Britain's Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams comments on the chuch abuse scandal. "I was speaking to an Irish friend recently who was saying that it's quite difficult in some parts of Ireland to go down the street wearing a clerical collar now," Williams told the BBC.

LONDON - The Roman Catholic church in Ireland has lost its credibility because of its mishandling of abuse by priests, the leader of the Anglican church said in remarks released Saturday. A leading Catholic archbishop said he was "stunned" by the comments.

It was the first time Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, the spiritual leader of the Church of England, has spoken publicly on the crisis engulfing the Catholic church. The remarks come ahead of a planned visit to England and Scotland by Pope Benedict XVI later this year.

"I was speaking to an Irish friend recently who was saying that it's quite difficult in some parts of Ireland to go down the street wearing a clerical collar now," Williams told the BBC. "And an institution so deeply bound into the life of a society, suddenly becoming, suddenly losing all credibility — that's not just a problem for the church, it is a problem for everybody in Ireland, I think."

He may be the world's foremost mixed-race leader, but when it came to the officialgovernment head count, President Barack Obama gave only one answer to the question about his ethnicbackground: African-American.

The White House confirmed Friday that Obama did not check multiple boxes onhis U.S. Census form, or choose the option that allows him to elaborate on hisracial heritage. He ticked the box that says "Black, African Am., or Negro."

Obama filled out the form on Monday, supplying information for himself, first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters Malia and Sasha, as well as for Mrs. Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, who lives with the family in the White House.

*Surprised? He denies his own heritage? What sort of example are you showing to the people? Certainly now one with ethics.

Karzai's speech befuddles Afghan officials

"Foreigners will make excuses, they do not want us to have a parliamentary election," a defiant Karzai said during a gathering of election officials Thursday, Reuters reported. "They want parliament to be weakened and battered, and for me to be an ineffective president and for parliament to be ineffective."

When asked for comment, Afghan officials seemed to want to steer clear of the controversial speech. Foreign Ministry officials said privately they had no explanation for Karzai’s statements, which threatened to alienate Western nations who provide so much crucial support – both financial and military – for Afghanistan.

Opponents of the statue — which is billed as representing Africa's rise from "centuries of ignorance, intolerance and racism" — are due to protest in central Dakar on Saturday despite a ban on all marches by town authorities.

In the latest blow to Wade's project, a leading imam on Friday issued a fatwa condemning it.

The $28-million statue has been criticized as a waste of money in a country with crumbling infrastructure and welfare provision, while Muslims have branded it "un-Islamic" for presenting the human form as an object of worship.

"We have issued a fatwa urging Senegal's imams this Friday to read the holy Koran in the mosques simply to ask Allah to preserve us from the punishment this monument of shame risks bringing on Senegal," imam Massamba Diop told followers at his central Dakar mosque, using the term for a religious ruling.

Soviet-style realism
Pro-Wade senator Ahmed Bachir Kounta, a Muslim scholar, said the statue was a cultural project and rejected the charge of idolatry.

"Every architectural work sparks controversies — look at the Eiffel Tower in Paris," he said of the 19th-century structure labeled by early critics as an expensive eyesore.

Wade, who at 83 has confirmed he will seek re-election in two years' time, has said he was personally involved in designing the statue. Critics have said it is more Soviet-style realism than traditional African art form.
